Cellmate, I got 17 on the first one today, below your “calculated” score. When I posted a pic here a week or two again, it was for the same reason.  Is the calculation broken?

jimmyp, congrats on beating the solver!

Its happened maybe five times since i started paying close attention this year

Perhaps calculated is not the best word to use. it already knows the solution. its the end result of an iterative process to find optimal moves to get from the original  board to the solution. after the first bunch of doubles are done, it finds singles that will set up another double. Sometimes there's more than one choice. Sometimes that choice breaks a future double... which is how it gets beat. i need to work on that.
